Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training for Australian Psychologists

Online, CPD-accredited training you can apply in your next session. Real psychodynamic depth, without a three to five year commitment.

Depth, without putting your career on hold

Most psychodynamic psychotherapy training in Australia runs for three to five years. That depth is real, and for a psychologist carrying a full caseload, stepping back for that long is rarely possible.

Deep Mind is built for the clinician who is already in practice and wants to work more relationally now. The training is online and short, grounded in psychodynamic and relational theory, and structured so you practise on real cases as you learn. You leave each module with something you can use in the room, not a qualification you will finish in five years.

Three ways in

Deep Mind Transformation Method, 4 weeks, 11 APS CPD hours

The 4-week foundation. You work through the psychodynamic foundations for understanding the mind, bring in attachment theory and the neuroscience of connection, and reframe the therapist's role so burnout loosens its grip. It is the starting point for psychologists who want clarity and a more sustainable way of working, quickly.

Deep Mind Mastery Journey, 8 weeks, 20 APS CPD hours

The 8-week advanced program, for psychologists ready to move from strategy into the artistry of relational work. Across four modules you learn to read countertransference as clinical data, work with the body's nonverbal language, and refine the timing of interpretation, so the therapeutic relationship itself becomes your most powerful tool.

Deep Mind Collective - ongoing integration, twice monthly

The third step, for psychologists who want to keep going. The Deep Mind Collective is a subscription program of twice-monthly group calls over 6 to 12 months, built around applying the psychodynamic and relational teachings directly in your ongoing clinical work. It is the space where the learning settles into practice.

What is the Deep Mind psychodynamic psychotherapy training?

Deep Mind is online psychodynamic psychotherapy training for registered Australian psychologists. Rather than a three to five year certification, it runs as two short, CPD-accredited courses: a 4-week foundation and an 8-week advanced program. Both are taught by clinical psychologist Tania Kalkidis and built to apply directly in everyday clinical work.

How long does the training take?

The training is deliberately short. The Transformation Method runs over 4 weeks and the Mastery Journey over 8 weeks, both online and part-time alongside clinical practice. Most psychodynamic psychotherapy training in Australia takes three to five years, so this is the practical alternative for psychologists who want depth without pausing their careers.

Is the training accredited for CPD?

Yes. The 4-week Transformation Method carries 11 APS CPD hours and the 8-week Mastery Journey carries 20 APS CPD hours. Both are APS CPD-accredited, so the hours count toward your annual professional development requirements while you deepen your psychodynamic and relational practice. You do not need to be a member of the APS or AAPI to enrol or to claim the CPD hours, the training is open to any registered psychologist in Australia.

Who is the training for?

It is designed for registered psychologists in Australia, particularly those trained in CBT-dominant settings who want to work more relationally. It suits clinicians feeling stretched by complex cases, drawn to understanding patterns rather than managing symptoms, and looking for a more sustainable and meaningful way of working.

Can I apply it in practice straight away?

Yes. Each module is built around clinical application, not theory for its own sake. You learn to use countertransference, attachment, and the relationship in the room as working tools, and you practise them on real cases as the course runs, so the skills land in your sessions immediately.

Who teaches the training?

The training is led by Tania Kalkidis, a clinical psychologist with over three decades of practice, registered with AHPRA (PSY0000976980) and a member of the APS and the AAPI. She is the creator of the Parallel Realities Model and teaches from direct clinical experience rather than theory alone.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Yes. Outcome research supports psychodynamic and relational therapy, including evidence that gains continue after treatment ends. For a plain summary of the studies, written for psychologists evaluating the approach, see the Deep Mind overview of the relational and psychodynamic therapy evidence base.

What Psychologists Say About Deep Mind Programs

"I really noticed a measurable improvement in energy levels and more confidence in 'just being myself and that being good enough' this week. I feel my sessions are flowing better as a result."

— Stephanie H., NSW

"The course allowed me to experience the richness of 'in vivo' relational formulations. I've also become much more comfortable having difficult conversations with clients which have led to transformative shifts."

— Helena S., VIC

Start where it makes sense for you

You do not have to choose the whole path at once. Begin with the 4-week Transformation Method to find your footing, or step into the 8-week Mastery Journey if you are ready to go deeper. Both are online, both count toward your APS CPD, and both are built to change how you work, not just what you know.
